Drew Atkins, Carver
January to March 2009Most Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays (varied hours)

Visit artist and Kwantlen First Nation community member Drew Atkins as he works on an art installation for the orchard throughout the winter in the Exhibits Building.

The sculpture consists of four “Coast Salish House Boards” made from cut steel and a carved post and beam structure. The panels will feature carvings of the First Salmon Ceremony and the Salmon Trade at Fort Langley. Drew wants his installation to be a place for people to come together and dialogue. The project will preserve oral traditions in history, making permanent a story that is often lost and unrecorded.

This project commemorates the 150th anniversary of the proclamation of the Crown Colony of British Columbia at Fort Langley, which took place at this site on November 19, 1858.

Cranberry Festival
Saturday, October 10th, 2009
10:00 am – 5:00 pm

Cranberries don't come from a can! At Fort Langley, First Nations people brought canoe loads of cranberries to trade. These were then shipped to San Francisco to be sold to gold prospectors - a vital source of vitamin C long before oranges were widely cultivated in California. Come celebrate our proud berry history by enjoying the cranberry harvest at the 14th annual Cranberry Festival in Fort Langley on October 10th. At Fort Langley NHS, we have a cranberry-packed day of activities for the young and the not-so-young including games, challenges, stories, cooking, and more.
