I'm going to take you on a tour to show you a few of the fascinating things we have on exhibit here at the Gulf of Georgia Cannery.
Here I'm out on the dock of the Cannery where the Fishermen used to unload their catch. Steveston is home to the largest commercial fleet in Canada, so we are surrounded by fishing boats and netlofts. This makes for a vibrant atmosphere in this quaint fishing community here at the mouth of the mighty Fraser River! It is hard to imagine that at the turn of the century there were 49 cannerys on the Fraser River from Steveston to New Westminster. Fifteen of those were in Steveston alone!
Inside the Gulf of Georgia Cannery you can find out all about the rich history of Steveston and why it was called the salmon capital of BC.
