One of Banff's oldest visitor attractions, the museum receives on average 40,000 visitors per year. The museum was designated as a National Historic Site in 1985 in recognition of its unique architectural style and its representation of early approaches to natural history interpretation. Built in 1903, it is the oldest park facility in the national park system and is also the oldest natural history museum in western Canada. This "museum of a museum" has hundreds of original specimens in its collection, dating back as far as the 1860s.
