2011 Kootenay National Park Bear Update Season Summary

In Kootenay National Park, a total of 296 bear sightings were reported from March through October: 180 black bears, 108 grizzly bears, and 8 unknown species.

Here are some highlights:

  • Overall, 2011 was an average year for bear activity, with an average number of bear-human encounters.
  • Unlike other areas in the mountain national parks where buffaloberry production was relatively poor, Kootenay had a fairly productive berry season. This was especially true around Marble Canyon, where five separate grizzly bears were reported using the area.
  • A bear warning was in effect for the Kindersley/Sinclair loop for most of the summer due to elevated bear activity.
  • Early in the season, a grizzly sow and her two young-of-last-year were seen around the Parks Canada McKay Compound east of Radium.

In this part of the Canadian Rockies, bears typically begin denning around mid-October to late November. But be aware that bears have been known to stay active during periods of extended warm weather or if food is easily accessible.

Remember that other carnivores, such as cougars and wolves, are active during the winter. Be aware of your surroundings when you are out enjoying the park this winter. Please report carnivore sightings to Banff Dispatch at 403-762-1470. See you in the spring!
