Officer Dress Coat, 49th Regiment of Foot

This 49th Regiment Officer dress coat is an example of an early war pattern coat which belonged to an officer in the 49th Regiment of Foot. Also known as the “Green Tigers,” the regiment served with distinction during the War of 1812, participating actively in prominent battles such as the Battle of Queenston heights (1812) and the Battle of Crysler’s Farm (1813). The 49th was also the home regiment of Major-General Sir Isaac Brock, who was leading men from the regiment when he was shot and killed at the Battle of Queenston Heights on 13 October 1812.

To learn more about Major-General Sir Isaac Brock’s involvement in the War of 1812, read Victory at Fort Detroit! in the This Week in History archives.
