War of 1812 - Artefact of the Week

Silver “Chief’s Medal”

This silver “Chief’s Medal”, inscribed “1814”, was presented to First Nations war leaders for their important contribution to the War of 1812. First Nations warriors played a deeply significant role in the war, and worked closely with British forces and Canadian militia in that period. Shawnee War Chief Tecumseh is famous for his involvement by leading roughly 35 tribal nations during the War of 1812, and was instrumental in the fall of Michilimackinac on 17 July 1812. After the important victory at Michilimackinac, First Nations became even more involved in the war effort, their participation being critical to famous and decisive battles, such as the Capture of Fort Detroit (1812), the American defeat at Queenston Heights (1812), and the Battle of Beaver Dams (1813).
