How to Get There

Ivvavik National Park

Getting to Inuvik, Northwest Territories:

Drive the Dempster Highway from Whitehorse, Yukon or take one of the daily flights from southern Canada.

Link to info on the Dempster: https://www.dempsterhighway.com/

Commercial airlines that fly to Inuvik, NT:

Air North
Canadian North

*Note: We strongly recommend visitors build some extra time in their travel itinerary to allow for inclement weather (you are travelling to the Arctic after all!) and to explore the wonders of the region.*

Getting to Ivvavik National Park:

There are no roads leading into Ivvavik National Park. Charter aircraft is presently the most common and practical means of accessing the park, and this service is available from Inuvik.

If you are taking a base camp trip or are rafting the Firth River with an operator, your charter flight is organised and included in the price of the trip.

If you are organising an independent trip, you will need to coordinate your flight in to Ivvavik National Park.

Air access locations are: Margaret Lake, Imniarvik, Stokes Point, Nunaluk Spit and Komakuk Beach. The landing sites at these locations are not maintained and some sites require special landing gear.

After being dropped off in the park for multi-day trips, visitors are on their own until the plane returns to pick them up. Poor weather can easily prevent the plane from returning on schedule. Make sure to carry extra supplies and schedule in at least two extra days in case of a delayed flight.

Aircraft Landing Permits

Visitors must apply for a free Parks Canada Aircraft Landing Permit which will be issued when registering for your trip. Aircraft charter companies will ask for your landing permit before leaving. No aircraft is permitted to land in Ivvavik without one.

Note: Aircraft charter companies must also have a current National Parks Business License to land in Ivvavik National Park.
