Gitwangak Battle Hill
National Historic Site of Canada
Gitwangak Battle Hill was a fortified village occupied
during the late 1700s and early 1800s by the Gitwangak
First Nation. Strategically located on a hill above the Kitwanga
River, the lofty stronghold was encircled by spiked logs
designed to roll onto approaching enemies. The village’s
most feared warrior was Chief ‘Nekt, who ruled over a
network of lucrative trading trails. Although the village itself
was destroyed by fire over a century ago, a short trail dotted
with interpretive panels leads to the lofty site. Totem poles
in the nearby village of Gitwangak relate the significance
of the site.
Gitwangak Battle Hill is along Kitwanga Road North, off
the Cassiar Highway (Highway 37) 90 km east of Terrace.
