Across the country, Canadians nominate persons, places and events of national historic significance. Parks Canada administers the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada, which reviews these nominations and makes recommendations to the Minister of the Environment for designations.
The accomplishments of many Canadian athletes, including Olympic athletes, have been deemed “outstanding and lasting contributions” of national historic significance. A glimpse into some of the more notable chapters in Canada’s rich athletic history is offered below.
Canadians are encouraged to nominate people, institutions, and places that have played a prominent role in the development of our sports. To find out more about how you can make a nomination, visit the Historic Sites and Monuments Board's Designation page.
