Miniature Portrait of Major Edward Cotton

This very small portrait, circa 1790, is roughly the size of a goose egg, and depicts Major Edward Cotton at the beginning of his military career. Cotton is best known for his British military involvement during the War of 1812, and was one of 1300 soldiers involved in the Battle of Fort George on May 27, 1813. Mortally wounded and left on the field after the battle, Cotton died from his wounds in Lower Canada after he was captured and repatriated later that year.
