Benjamin Sulte was born at Trois-Rivières. While a public servant in the Department of Milicia he devoted himself to the study of history, publishing, among other works: Histoire des Canadiens-Français, Histoire de la Milice canadienne-française and La Bataille de Châteauguay. Gérard Malchelosse, his bibliographer, collected and published his other works in twenty volumes (1918-34). Sulte was a founding member of the Royal Society of Canada in 1882, and became its president in 1904. He died in Ottawa.
