Born at Port Shoreham, N.S., educated at Guysborough Academy and at McGill, Tory served as professor at McGill (1893-1905), Principal of McGill College, Vancouver (1906-7), first President of the University of Alberta ( 1908-28), and founder and President of Carleton College (1942-7). A distinguished scientist, he was chairman and subsequently President of the National Research Council (1923-35), President of the Pacific Science Congress in 1933 and of the Royal Society of Canada in 1939. Throughout his life he demonstrated his commitment to the spread of scientific knowledge and international good will. He died in Ottawa.
