In 1716, Chaussegros de Léry, was named chief engineer of New France. He reported to the King of France on the colony's* defence. In 1745, after the fall of Louisbourg, he headed the construction of Québec's fortifications, built from plans he himself had drawn up 30 years earlier. The walls built in 1745 are still standing today.
