William Phips was a sailor and adventurer who served England. After several successful missions which earned him a good reputation, he led a military attack against Québec in 1690. The English colonies* wanted to take possession of the French territory, starting with the capital Québec. The expedition was a failure. The attack was repelled by Governor Frontenac and his men after only a few days of cannon fire.
