In 1672, the comte de Frontenac was named governor of New France by King Louis XIV (fourteenth). Being a military man, he mainly looked after the colony's* defence. He had Fort Frontenac built at the entrance of Lake Ontario to control the fur trade. He also led several attacks on the English colonies* and the Iroquois to try and end the Iroquois wars.
