Charles Huault de Montmagny was the first governor of New France. When he arrived in the colony* he visited the settlements and realised that the inhabitants needed protection from the Iroquois. Montmagny spent the next fifteen years negotiating with the Iroquois, but was unable to put a stop to the conflicts.

Montmagny means "big mountain". The Amerindians translated it in their language as "Onontio". When Montmagny left office, the Amerindians gave all the governors who came after him the name "Onontio".
