As a family, or in neighbourhood groups, decide to spend time together
going for walks, cleaning up garbage, and noticing any changes in water
quality and plant and animal life. Talk about and report findings to
other people.
Ecological Monitoring
On a regular basis, and over the course of the school year, groups
can measure ocean temperature and observe micro-organisms. Find out
what your group can do to participate in monitoring and data collection
programs underway, which assist your community in ocean protection and
education. Link up with local stewardship groups, such as the Shorekeepers
program, or the Colquitz Watershed Stewardship Project. Apprentice to
university students and researchers to help them with their work. See
Part 4: Extensions and Resources (pp. 99-106) for contact details.
Eelgrass Restoration
Eelgrass meadows are essential to nurturing sea life in the Salish
Sea. Restoration projects in this habitat complement the "Salmonids
in the Classroom" projects currently underway in some B.C. schools
by increasing awareness of habitat essential for survival of salmonids
raised and released by children. Students can apprentice to community
experts and assist in the work. See Part 4: Extensions and Resources
(pp. 99-106) for contact details.
