SALISH SEA

A Handbook For Educators

Sample Activities

Music Activities

Selected learning outcomes K-3:

  • perform rhythmic patterns from classroom repertoire

Selected learning outcomes 4-7:

  • identify beat, metre and rhythmic patterns in classroom repertoire
  • use the elements of rhythm, melody and expression to interpret a range of thoughts, images and feelings

Free Movement To Music

Refer to the "Interpretive Movement" rhythm activity (p. 3).

Teach students how to play "Silent Ball" (Blue Planet, p. 11).

"Silent Ball" can provide the framework of self-discipline required to do this activity successfully.

Play part of Seal's Lullaby from the CD.

Notice the characteristics of the music:

  • Is it slow, fast?
  • Is it dreamy or vigorous?

Have children move freely in the space available in appropriate ways. Small actions for soft, slow music; larger actions for more vigorous music.

(See page 3 for "survival rules" to make the activity successful.)

Repeat this activity with a song that has a contrasting feel, such as Boat Ashore, Free In The Harbour or Salish Sea.
