Marine Poster Contest 2010-2011

How to keep the ocean healthy...

Let us know what you do or what we can all do to keep the ocean healthy. What does a healthy ocean look like? What creatures and things would live there? Would you enjoy swimming, fishing and exploring? Use your creativity to make a poster that shows how you would protect and conserve the ocean.

Guidelines:

! Please be careful to avoid creatures that do not live in the ocean environment of the BC Pacific Coast.
Here is a list of common creatures that do not live in our waters:

  • Green sea turtle
  • Seahorse
  • Electric eel
  • Clown fish
  • Puffer fish
  • Angel fish
  • Palm trees
  • Beluga whale

The poster will show:

  1. The ocean environment of the Pacific Coast of British Columbia AND
  2. How people help to keep the ocean healthy OR
  3. How people and ocean creatures share the ocean
  • Only original artwork will be accepted
  • Line drawings are allowed, but they must be in dark ink, not pencil
  • The poster should be two dimensional (flat surface), using the artist’s choice of medium (or a combination of media): crayon, paint, ink etc.
  • No digital images or submissions will be accepted
  • Calendar, magazine, website or photographic images are not permitted

Eligibility:

Groups or individuals in grades 4 to 8 residing in British Columbia.

Prizes:

Artists:
  • The Grand Prize includes a one year Parks Canada Family Discovery Pass and prize package.
  • The top six winners will also win a Nikon Coolpix digital camera or binoculars
  • Prize packages will also be presented to finalists.
Teachers:
  • Teachers can win a Vancouver Aquarium school program visit or online school program for a class*
  • Vancouver Island teachers can also win a Shaw Ocean Discovery Centre school program visit for a class*

  • *School program prizes will be by lottery and can be redeemed in 2011-2012 school year.

Information Required:
Please use the entry form or on the back of each poster tape a typed sheet of paper clearly indicating:

  1. Artist's name(s) in full
  2. Teacher's name (if applicable)
  3. School name or club name (if applicable)
  4. Grade
  5. Contact address, email, phone and fax number
  6. One to three sentences on what you do to keep the ocean healthy

Size:
Minimum size is 21.5 cm x 28 cm (8.5"x11")
Maximum size is 28 cm x 43 cm (11"x17")
A blank 2.54 cm (1 inch) border is required around the outside of the poster.

Deadline:
Posters must be receivedby 5.00 pm on May 6, 2011 . NOTE: please mail posters flat; do not roll or fold them.
Winners will be announced on World Oceans Day, June 8, 2011.

Intent:
To use winning images from the contest in Government of Canada publications and displays, including print and/or electronic media (e.g., newsletter, website, poster).

Copyright:
All poster submissions will remain the property of the Government of Canada with full credit and recognition of the artist(s). Originals will not be returned.

Judging:
Conducted by a panel of marine educators and Government of Canada employees.
