Stick to the Trail

When you go out on your adventure, be sure to stay together and stick to the trail! You are less likely to get lost, and it will also be easier to find you if something happens. Trail routes were specifically chosen for their scenery and significance; we hope you enjoy them!

Make sure you have enough time to cover the planned distance. If you think you're going to be late, don't panic and don't leave the trail. By taking shortcuts, you not only increase your chances of getting lost or hurt, you also damage the environment by trampling sensitive vegetation, causing soil erosion and destroying habitat.

Respect trail signs , especially if the area is closed! Stay back from cliff edges and canal walls, and be careful around viewpoints.

Be aware of hazards. Sticking to the trail does not take the place of good planning. Carry a map, a flashlight in case you are late returning, and be prepared.

Children are great explorers too! They may wander off. Keep an eye on them, let them know how far they can stray, and tell them what to do if they get lost.

For more information, consult a warden or visitor services staff member from the national park, national historic site or NMCA you are visiting.
