FEATURED STORY IDEA

Visitor in a forest© Parks Canada

Travel a few hours from the 2010 Winter Games in Vancouver, and be transported thousands of years into the past. Trek through a dripping rainforest of giant Sitka spruce that seem to touch the sky. Feel the gripping stare of weathered eagles, ravens, bears and whales that peer down from a cluster of leaning totem poles that still hold vigil over the moss-shrouded remnants of longhouses in old Haida villages. Explore the island of SGang Gwaay, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where knowledgeable Haida Watchmen guide visitors through the natural and spiritual wonders of this unique place. Share the natural and cultural worlds of the Haida and their 13,000 year connection with the land and sea at the Haida Heritage Centre at Kaay Llnagaay in the First Nations community of Skidegate.

This is Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve and Haida Heritage Site. Here, at the southern tip of Haida Gwaii, formerly the Queen Charlotte Islands, nature abounds—from black bears and sea lions to giant salmon and whales—and magic is everywhere.
