Beaver: The animal that sparked Canada’s exploration

North American Beaver, Castor canadensis.

The North American Beaver was one popular rodent. Top hats made of beaver fur were all the rage in Europe in the 18th and 19th centuries. Fur traders brought the pelts back from North America, after trading European goods with Aboriginal people. At its peak, 100,000 pelts were shipped to Europe every year.
